Foods that naturally cleanse
by Laurel |  Dec 3, 2013

Cleanses have become a craze in recent years, but for those of us who aren't willing to give up on solid foods, these diets can be daunting. Fortunately, you don't have to live on liquids alone to detox your body. In fact, there are certain foods that can have the same effect.

Add these foods to your plate and you'll flush out the toxins without having to withstand any tummy rumblings:

This creamy fruit is like nature's cleanse. In a report for Women's Health magazine, Keri Glassman, R.D., explained that the glutathione in avocados can prevent your intestines from absorbing certain fats that cause major damage. Plus, this compound also helps clear out the liver pathway. As an added bonus, you'll reap the benefits of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. Instead of spreading mayo onto your sandwich, slice on some avocado.

A detox starts with the right breakfast, and you can't do much better than a bowl of oats. Megan Madden, a registered dietitian in New York City, explained to Shape magazine that whole grains are packed with soluble fiber, which attaches itself to the bad cholesterol in your body and drags it out. By lowering your blood cholesterol level, it also reduces your risk for heart disease. If oats aren't your thing, you can reap the same perks from brown rice and whole grain bread.

A dash of garlic not only enhances the flavor of any dish, but also boosts the enzymes in your liver that flush out toxins. SheKnows explained that the selenium and allicin in garlic cleanse the liver while eliminating harmful bacteria from the body. Try chopping some into soup or even adding it to an omelet.

It's no secret that this green veggie is a nutritional powerhouse. Did you know that it's a top artery-clearing food as well? Shane Ellison, an organic chemist, told Shape that eating asparagus relieves pressure within the veins and arteries, which then alleviates built-up inflammation and also helps to prevent blood clots. Roast this veggie as a side dish or add it to your next pasta dish.

These root veggies may stain your fingers when you slice them open, but that dark red pulp is what makes them so good for your body. Glassman explained that beets are one of the only edible plants packed with betalains, which have anti-inflammatory and detoxification benefits. Betalains also help to repair and regenerate cells in the liver, which is the body's main detox center. That's why they're a core component of the happy cleanse by bliss + joulebody menu. This easy three-day detox includes a berry beet smoothie every day, among other delicious meals and snacks. Since the health perks of beets decrease with cooking, try tossing raw ones into a salad.
