Bending your way to a better mood
by Jessica |  Aug 28, 2012

Bummed out? Bored? Bogged down by stress? No matter which of these words characterizes your bad mood, you might be able to bend and snap your way out of it. You probably already know how yoga, like all exercise, promotes the release of a feel-good chemical in your brain called serotonin. But certain positions can brighten even the worst of your blues.

If you're bored, you might be able to stimulate your mind with downward dog. This classic yoga pose is probably one of the first you ever learned. It stretches your hamstrings, calves, shoulders and chest while strengthening your arms, shoulders, quads and ankles. These qualities, plus the way it keeps your spine flexible, makes it great for fighting fatigue and making you more mentally alert.

If stress is getting you down, try a squat pose. Getting down in a squat position roots your feet to the floor, which can make you feel more grounded. This position also stretches and releases tension in your spine, which can be tense if you're under a lot of stress.

Sometimes, you might just be feeling blue. This is particularly common as the days start getting shorter - less sunshine can mean you're more likely to feel gloomy. Sun salutations, another beginner yoga classic, are designed to get your heart pumping, which warms your body and makes you feel sunnier overall.

You might notice how many yoga studios use aromatherapy and candles to create a soothing atmosphere. While it never hurts to do yoga in a group with an instructor, you can also create this spa-like experience at home with candles like the travel candle moroccan amber candle. This smooth and spicy smell might just energize you all on its own!
