Shop to be chic: 3 easy steps to a perfect wardrobe
by Lisse |  Mar 29, 2013

Everyone wanted Cher Horowitz's wardrobe in the movie "Clueless." Her perfectly cataloged clothing seemed to make it easy to pick out perfect outfits all the time. Although we've long since learned that choosing the chicest duds is not what defines us (sorry, Cher), that hasn't stopped us from constantly striving for that perfect wardrobe - flawless fashion that just so happens to be well-organized.

Whether you're just starting to dabble in the great wide world of fashion or you're a clotheshorse and can't even find your socks beneath the hordes of trendy tops you have, there are a few tips you can follow to build or refine your clothing inventory to make picking out your clothes a whole lot easier. And yes, shopping is involved!

1. Take inventory, then take names
According to Glamour magazine, we wear less than 25 percent of all our clothes. Take the time to sift out all the stuff you don't wear. It's generally a good idea to do this each season. My rule is: If I haven't worn it in the past year, I probably won't wear it in the coming year, either. Sound too discriminatory for you? Think of all the clothes you did wear - that happened for a reason! Of course, there will always be some statement pieces that get minimal play over the years, and you can keep those. Get rid of the excess - you can donate it to a local thrift shop or women's shelter and know you're helping others in need. Once you have done this, you can take inventory of what you really have, and decide what you need to shop for. Only then can you have a successful shopping trip!

2. Only buy it if you can wear it three ways
This trick not only helps to keep your closet clean - it will save you some money as you build your wardrobe on high-quality staple pieces. That cashmere sweater can go with jeans on the weekend, over an oxford for work and layered with necklaces to dress it up, right? Add it to the bag. Think multi-season, too. Can you wear that neon leather bag in spring, summer and fall? Buy it!

3. Invest in lasting trends
Leather jackets, pencil skirts and tall boots will give your look a trendy edge, but that doesn't mean they'll be out of style next year. There are certain pieces that are incorporated into every year's fashions and always look stylish. Look for these fashionista staples - bomber jackets, trench coats and blazers are some others - and add them to your wardrobe to look chic year after year.
