How to choose the best water bottle for you
by Gina |  Sep 28, 2012

You probably read this advice on blogs everywhere: stay hydrated! Whether you're trying to fight off a cold, keep wrinkles at bay or refuel after a sweaty session of hot yoga, water is crucial to almost every aspect of your health.

Although how much water you need to drink every day varies depending on a number of factors, the Institute of Medicine reports women need at least nine cups of total beverages a day. Are you getting enough H2O? If your answer is "no," your water bottle may be to blame. Choosing a water bottle that you actually like is the key to staying hydrated throughout the day. So what should you look for?

Reduce, reuse, recycle!
You can buy a massive pack of bottled water, but the environment won't thank you for all those plastic bottles that you used. Instead, choose one you can wash out and reuse time and time again. Not only will this save your conscience, it will save you money in the long haul.

Materials matter
Reusable plastic water bottles have been around for ages, but not all plastic is created equal. You may have heard about BPA in plastics. This chemical is an endocrine disruptor, which is said to leach out of certain plastics called polycarbonates. Today, most plastic bottles will say BPA-free, but you could avoid the risk altogether by choosing aluminum, stainless steel or glass.

Tell me what you want
It might take a little trial and error, but you have to know what you want in a water bottle. For instance, I'm not ashamed to admit that the appearance of my water bottle matters. After all, if I am going to be toting around with me from my desk to the gym to wherever else, it better be a good reflection of my style!

Aside from the style, you should also consider certain features that will make you want to drink it - do you love straws? Maybe you need a hook to clip it inside your gym bag, or a sleeve to keep it nice and cool.

My favorite? I can't stop guzzling my BKR bottle, which is made from recyclable glass with a smooth rubbery sleeve on the outside. Glass means it's entirely non-toxic, and the sleeve is like a bumper - with style. Bonus: the simplified design matches all my outfits.
